Fungal infections of the nails are common. Fungal infections can also be a problem for people wearing acrylic nails. Fungal nails usually begin with an opaque white or silvery area at the distal (outside) edge of a nail. Onychomycosis usually begins as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your fingernail or toenail.
Fungal infections are not commonly contagious nor do they spread easily between people. The nail provides a safe place for the fungus and protects it while it grows, since fungus like dark and damp places. Nail fungus grows more often in people with weaker immune systems, which rather than suppress it, allow the fungus to become established. Nail fungus is made up of tiny organisms (Tinea Unguium) that can infect fingernails and toenails.
Toenail fungus also known as onychomycosis is caused by a group of fungus called dermatophytes. These infections usually develop on nails continually exposed to warm, moist environments, such as sweaty shoes or shower floors. The main problems identified were embarrassment, functional problems at work, reduction in social activities, fears of spreading the disease to others, and pain.
Nail fungus is becoming more common in the US. The nails of our fingers and toes are very effective barriers. This barrier makes it quite difficult for a superficial infection to invade the nail. Once an infection has set up residence however, the same barrier that was so effective in protecting us against infection now works against us, making it difficult to treat the infection.
The rise in nail fungus is thought to be due to a combination of increased detection as well as increased risk of infection. Factors that contribute to this increased risk include aging of the population, spread of HIV/AIDS, tight footwear, vigorous physical activity, and use of communal swimming pools, locker rooms, etc. Nail fungus is more than a cosmetic problem.
It can be painful and interfere with daily activities such as walking, playing sports, writing, typing, and other activities that require manipulating small objects or repetitive finger use. An international study conducted by dermatologists found that nail fungus had a significant impact on the quality of life of people with the disease. prevalence in America is about 2-3%, but some have reported it as high as 13%. Even at a low estimate of 2%, this accounts for 6 million Americans with toenail fungus. Toenail fungus affects men twice as often as it affects women.
Fungal nail infection is diagnosed from a sample of the debris under the nail. Nail fungus can be difficult to treat, and repeated infections are common. There are a number of treatments for onychomycosis. Prevention of injuries to the nail is very important. Medications for onychomycosis fall into two categories; topical and oral. Topical medications are most helpful in treating early, small infections and for maintaining clear nails. Topical medication inhibit the growth of the fungus allowing for faster growth of the nail. Oral anti-fungal medications are Itraconazole (Sporonox and Terbinafine (Lamisil. Both medications can be quite expensive as they need to be taken once daily for 3 months. With both medications there is a long list of benign side effects including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, rash, headache, taste disturbances and dizziness. Serious adverse events are very rare, less than 0.5%, but do include hepatitis and acute hepatic necrosis. The effectiveness of the medications ranges from 60 to 80%, with a recurrence rate of 15%. Lamisil appears to be more effective and has fewer drug interactions than Sporonox.
Tips of Nail Fungus
1.Wash your feet regularly with soap and water.
2.Remember to dry your feet thoroughly after washing.
3.Properly fitted shoes are essential; an astonishing number of people wear shoes that don't fit right, and cause serious foot problems. A shoe with a firm sole and soft upper is best for daily activities.
4.Shower shoes should be worn when possible, in public areas.
5.Shoes, socks, or hosiery should be changed daily.
6.Toenails should be clipped straight across so that the nail does not extend beyond the tip of the toe.
7.Use a quality foot powder -- talcum, not cornstarch -- in conjunction with shoes that fit well and are made of materials that breathe.
8.Avoid wearing excessively tight hosiery, which promotes moisture.
9.Wear socks made of synthetic fiber, which tend to "wick" away moisture faster than cotton or wool socks, especially for sports activity.
10.Disinfect home pedicure tools and don't apply polish to nails suspected of infection. Signs of an infection include toes that are red, discolored, or swollen.

Why do nail fungus infections (onychomycosis) strike some people for no apparent reason? The answer's not entirely clear, but you can lessen your chances of getting onychomycosis (toenail fungus)with some common sense nail fungus hygiene. Good daily habits that support the health of skin and nails can go a long way towards keeping the fungi away - and if you do get an infection, there are things you can do to prevent it from spreading and to treat it before it becomes too severe.
Most cases of onychomycosis begin on the feet, so hygiene to avoid nail fungus begins with good foot care. Keep your feet clean and dry as much as possible. When you shower or bathe, wash between all your toes and then dry these areas carefully - be sure to use a different part of the towel to dry between each toe, as fungi and other pathogens can be spread from one area to another with a towel or cloth. If you tend to have sweaty feet, it's good nail fungus hygiene to buy socks that will absorb rather than trap the moisture, and change them daily, or even more often if necessary. Wear shoes with as much ventilation as possible.
Hygiene to avoid nail fungus includes keeping your nails trimmed and clean. Dirt and organisms can get trapped under the nails, where it is warm and moist, and begin to grow - fungi that are able to live on keratin, the protein in nails and hair, can invade the nail and initiate an infection that is hard to get rid of. Footwear is an important part of nail fungus hygiene, but you need to strike a balance between protecting your feet from exposure to fungi, and trapping moisture and fungi inside shoes that don't have much ventilation. In a warm climate, it's easy to wear airy footwear, but this is also the type of climate where you are most likely to need good hygiene to avoid nail fungus - fungi thrive in warm damp environments. It's a good idea to wear shoes all the time while outside: even a pair of light sandals will minimize exposure to soil and contaminated surfaces. Be especially careful to wear shoes in moist public places such as swimming pool decks, locker rooms, saunas and showers.
If you do see the beginnings of what looks like nail fungus in spite of good nail fungus hygiene, you may be able to vanquish it quickly with one of the home or alternative remedies. The quicker you act the better, since advanced onychomycosis is particularly difficult to get rid of. Trim and file the affected nail as much as possible, continue to use hygiene to avoid nail fungus to lessen the chance that it will spread to other digits, and diligently apply the remedy that you have chosen. If the nail does not show signs of improvement within a couple of weeks, see your doctor to have the condition properly diagnosed toenail fungus.

Walt Yates believes that the development of successful internet strategies is made easier by the quality of data used in planning and analysis, most of it unavailable for conventional marketing channels. Keyword research data helped them realize the true nature of their potential internet business on the internet.

The search term 'seeds' was the obvious place to start but the keyword-researched results were disappointing. The challenge was to separate potential buyers from other internet researchers. They discovered that people who were searching for 'seed catalogs' were much more likely to buy than those just searching for 'seeds'.
It was a useful lesson in developing their internet strategy, as Walt Yates explains.
'This was our 'aha' moment. It reminded us that things hadn't really changed for our core audience when they used the internet. They were still looking for the online equivalent of seed catalogs, and Park Seeds was still a seed catalog company. But when people searched using 'seed catalogs' they didn't find us, they found our competitors. We changed our content to deal with this right away. Now, our core audience finds us when they go onto the internet, not our competition.'
Park Seeds also did more work to attract the internet seed catalog audience, and not irrelevant searchers. The search term 'Echinacea' was a good example
that they found in their keyword research. The keyword data revealed a split between those searching for vitamin supplements and those searching for the plant. Park Seed resolved this by using the terms 'Echinacea plant', 'Echinacea flowers' and 'cone flower', its common name, in their content.
Keyword research finds misspellings
Wordtracker also helped Park Seed connect with younger audiences, most of them taking their first steps into the world of gardening. The big challenge was to get Park Seed top of their particular searches, which were often different to older gardeners, and sometimes didn't seem to make any sense. Even the most seasoned gardeners struggle to spell different common and botanical plant names, especially as horticulture experts themselves often disagreed about spellings. So, what chance did new gardeners have? The plant name 'Crepe myrtle' is a good example, as Wordtracker's search numbers reveal:
- Crepe myrtle - 206
- Crape myrtle - 38
- Crapemyrtle - 53
- Crepemyrtle - 0
Crepemyrtle had zero searches, even though it is the spelling that many horticulturists believe to be the correct spelling. Park Seed decided that the copy on their website had to recognize the debate on spelling, for this and for other plants. They used numerous different spellings of plant names, correct and incorrect, so that all of their potential customers would find them. Walt Yates believes that other businesses on the internet should think more about incorrect, regional and vernacular spellings.
'You would never turn away a customer because he turned up at your store and mispronounced the name of one of your products or got the spelling wrong, so why do it online? That's what you're doing when you ignore customers who use incorrect spellings in their searches. You need to be creative and make sure that your copy incorporates these so-called mistakes, maybe even have some fun with it!'
Using the keyword research makes for understanding seasonal factors and trends that could add to sales.
At the end of 2005, Park Seed had great success in using the search terms 'gardening gift certificates' and 'gardening gift cards', driving strong sales during the normally stagnant month of November. The Wordtracker data revealed that a large number of searchers were looking for 'gift cards' as well as 'gift certificates, which drove the dual focus of the search engine optimization (SEO) push. Of course, some of the thinking behind this strategy was based on an understanding of the seasonal nature of the business, but further insights from Wordtracker told the Park Seed team when it was time to change their content and SEO strategy, as Walt Yates explains:
'The Wordtracker numbers told us when the business for gift certificates was starting to die away, a week before Christmas, and when it was time to change our strategy, towards spring planting. It's a good example of why businesses have to constantly review and renew their content, based on what the keyword research data is telling them. That way, businesses keep search engine traffic and sales high. Those that don't do this will lose their market share.'
Keyword research data is a key building block for Park Seed's future internet success strategy.
The future of business on the internet for Park Seed looks good, thanks to the team's dedication and constant vigilance. The intelligent use of keyword research data is now a required step for any and all web promotions.

If done correctly, a linking strategy will not only attract more visitors to your site, it will help search engines believe that your Web site is more important, and they will reward you with higher listings. Higher listings in search results mean more targeted visitors. This, combined with visitors coming directly from other Web sites, is the double benefit of a linking program.
How hard is it to set up an effective linking program?
It is relatively easy to make pages of links. The value of this is limited to your Web site viewers. If you have other Web sites linking to your site, that is where the value lies. The best way to do that is to link to highly desired Web sites first, and then ask for a reciprocal link. This seems like an easy task, until one gets going on it.
The real get-down-and-get-dirty work is:

We find that it takes reviewing about four Web sites for every one that passes our requirements, and agrees to cross-link. So for a 50-link program, we would meticulously sift through about 200 Web sites.
